2020 Tax Amesty Program

2020 Tax Amesty Program

The following is a letter that will be sent out to all taxpayers that may benefit from the Tax Amnesty Program.  Those taxpayers that have a balance due, judgement or failure to file will be receiving this letter. If you do not receive this letter but believe you would benefit from this program, feel free to stop by our offices and we would be happy to answer any questions you may have.

Dear Taxpayer,

In May 2019, the residents of Canal Fulton passed tax reform, which will increase the City’s overall tax rate to 2.0%, but also give citizens full credit for taxes paid to other cities (up to 2.0%). This reform has the potential to change the tax liabilities for many citizens in a positive way starting in 2020. As we move forward in preparing for the new tax code, we have also been conducting a review of prior year tax returns to determine balances owed under the old tax code. During this review, your tax account was identified as either not having filed a return for a particular year, having a balance owed from a prior year, or some combination of both.

To help resolve taxes owed under the old tax code, the City is offering a one-time tax amnesty program as an opportunity to “wipe the slate clean” and encourage future compliance under the new tax code. During the period of January 1, 2020 through October 30, 2020, the City will allow residents and businesses to:
* File an outstanding tax return and pay the balance and late fee, but not incur penalties or interest.
* Pay an outstanding tax balance and late fee, but have the penalties and interest waived.
* Pay a portion of the outstanding tax balance and late fee, and sign a new payment agreement to resolve the remaining balance without penalties and interest.

Based on a review of your tax account, we feel that this program could be beneficial to you and encourage you to take advantage of this one-time opportunity. If you would like to participate, please stop in our office or call (330-854-9448) between the hours of 8 am and 4 pm, Monday through Friday. No appointment is necessary. The program will be offered through October 30, 2020. After this date, we will resume enforcing the tax code to the fullest extent possible.

Sincerely,
William Keltner
Tax Administrator , City of Canal Fulton
